Darcey Bussell is a world-renowned English ballerina. She was born on April 27, 1969, in London, England. Her parents are John and Angela Bussell. She has two sisters, Melanie and Samantha. Bussell began her ballet training at the age of four at the Elmhurst Ballet School in Birmingham. She later attended the Royal Ballet School in London.
Bussell joined The Royal Ballet in 1987. She was promoted to principal dancer in 1989. She has danced many lead roles with the company, including Swan Lake, Giselle, and Sleeping Beauty. Bussell has also danced with the English National Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. She has performed as a guest artist with many other ballet companies around the world.
In 1995, Bussell was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2006, she was awarded the Order of the Companions of Honour (CH) by the queen.
Bussell has appeared on television several times, including as a judge on the BBC reality show Strictly Come Dancing. She has also written two books about ballet: A Dancing Life (2007) and Dancing into the Limelight (2011).
Bussell retired from dancing in 2007. She now serves as a patron of several arts organizations, including the Royal Academy of Dance and the Royal Opera House. She is also a trustee of the Royal Academy of Music.
