Charley Pride (born March 18, 1934) is an American country music singer, musician, guitarist, recording artist, performer, and business owner. His unique style of country music and his voice have made him one of the most successful and recognizable country music artists of all time.
Born in Sledge, Mississippi, Pride was one of 11 children born to a sharecropping family. He began singing in church at a young age and learned to play the guitar from his father. After serving in the United States Army during the mid-1950s, he began his career as a professional musician, performing in clubs and bars in the South. He soon caught the attention of country music producers and began recording his own music.
Pride’s first hit song, “Just Between You and Me,” was released in 1966. He went on to release a string of successful singles, including “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'” and “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone.” Pride became the first black artist to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.
Today, Pride continues to perform and tour throughout the United States. He has released more than 50 albums and has sold more than 70 million records worldwide. He has won numerous awards, including three Grammy Awards, three CMA Awards, and an NAACP Image Award.
Pride is estimated to have a net worth of $40 million. He has been married to Rozene Cohran since 1956 and has four children.
