Brandy Rayana Norwood (born February 11, 1979), better known by her mononym Brandy, is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. Born into a musical family in McComb, Mississippi and raised in Carson, California, she began her career as a child and performed as a backing vocalist for teen groups. In 1993, Norwood signed with Atlantic Records. The following year, she released her self-titled debut album, which was certified quadruple-Platinum in the US, selling six million copies worldwide.
Norwood starred in the UPN sitcom Moesha as the title character, which lasted six seasons and resulted in numerous other roles. She has since played supporting roles in a number of films and television shows. In 2002, she released her fourth album, Full Moon, which sold three million copies worldwide and produced the single “What About Us?”. Throughout her career, she has sold over 40 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
Early Life
Brandy Rayana Norwood was born on February 11, 1979, in McComb, Mississippi to Willie Norwood and Sonja Bates-Norwood. She has an older brother Ray J, as well as a younger sister Whitney Houston. Her parents divorced when she was four years old and she was raised by her mother in Carson, California. Brandy began singing at an early age and started out as a backing vocalist for teen groups. In 1993, at the age of fourteen, she was signed to Atlantic Records.
Career
Norwood’s self-titled debut album was released in 1994 and went on to sell six million copies worldwide. The album’s success was due in part to the success of the single “I Wanna Be Down”, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The album was certified quadruple-Platinum in the US and earned Norwood a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

The album was certified Platinum in the US and earned Norwood a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.
In 2008, Norwood starred in the musical film Cinderella as Cinderella. The film was a commercial success and earned Norwood a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
In 2010, Norwood returned to television with the reality show Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business. The show followed Norwood and her family as they worked together on various business ventures. In 2012, she released her sixth album, Two Eleven, which sold one million copies worldwide and produced the singles “Put It Down” and “Wildest Dreams”. The album was certified Gold in the US and earned Norwood a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.
In 2014, Norwood starred in the BET television movie The Perfect Match as Terra. The film was a commercial success and earned Norwood a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie or Mini-Series.
In 2016, Norwood released her seventh album, B7. The album sold 500,000 copies worldwide and produced the singles “Beggin & Pleadin” and “Baby Mama”.
In 2018, Norwood starred in the Lifetime television movie Faith Under Fire as Antoinette Tuff. The film was a commercial success and earned Norwood a NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie or Mini-Series.
In 2020, Norwood will release her eighth album, B8.

Norwood has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Robert Smith from 2001 to 2003. Her second marriage is to Ryan Press from 2015 to present. She has one daughter from her first marriage, Sy’rai Iman Smith (born 2002), and one son from her second marriage, Ryder Kenneth Press (born 2019).
