Bella Abzug was born in the Bronx, New York on July 24, 1920. Her parents, Esther and William Abzug, were Jewish immigrants from Russia. Bella had two sisters, Evelyn and Gloria. Bella’s early education took place at the local public schools in the Bronx. She then went on to study at Hunter College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1941.
After college, Bella worked as a lawyer in New York City. In 1970, she was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives from New York’s 19th Congressional District.
Bella served three terms in Congress, during which time she was a leading voice for women’s rights. After leaving Congress, Bella continued to work as a lawyer and advocate for women’s rights. She died on March 31, 1998, at the age of 77. ..
