Akshay Kumar is an Indian-born Canadian actor, producer, martial artist, and television personality. He has appeared in over a hundred Hindi-language films and has won several awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Kumar was born in Amritsar, India, to Hari Om Bhatia, a Punjabi-speaking Arora family, and Aruna Bhatia, a Sindhi-speaking Bhatia family. His parents separated when he was young and he was brought up by his mother. He began his career as a martial artist and worked as a stuntman in Hindi films. He made his acting debut with a small role in the 1987 film Aaj. He appeared as the lead actor in the 1991 film Saugandh and went on to star in such films as Khiladi (1992), Mohra (1994), Dilwale (1994), Sapoot (1996), Angaaray (1998), Hera Pheri (2000), Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Khakee (2004), Garam Masala (2005), Namastey London (2007), Singh Is Kinng (2008), Housefull (2010), Rowdy Rathore (2012), Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014), Baby (2015), Airlift (2016), Housefull 3 (2016), Jolly LLB 2 (2017) and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017).
Kumar has been married to Twinkle Khanna since 2001. They have two children, Aarav and Nitara. He is a black belt in taekwondo and has also learned martial arts such as karate, judo, and kickboxing. He is a former national level boxer. Kumar has been a vegetarian since 2004. He is a supporter of animal rights and has been involved in PETA’s campaigns against animal testing and fur farming.
