Abraham Beame was born in London on March 20, 1906, the youngest of four children. His parents, Barnett and Yetta Beame, were Polish Jews who had immigrated to England in the 1880s. Barnett Beame was a successful tailor, and the family lived in a comfortable middle-class home in the East End of London.
Beame was an average student in his early years, but he excelled at sports, particularly boxing. He also developed a love of reading, and his favorite authors were Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare.
In 1923, Beame emigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings. They settled in New York City, and Beame began working as a clerk in his father’s tailor shop. He also took night classes at the City College of New York, where he studied accounting.
In 1928, Beame married Mary Cohen, and the couple had three children.
In 1933, Beame’s father died, and he took over the family tailor business. The business thrived during the 1930s and 1940s, and Beame became a wealthy man.
In 1946, Beame entered politics, winning election to the New York City Council. He served on the council for 10 years, and in 1956 he was elected comptroller of New York City. He held that office for 12 years.
In 1965, Beame was elected mayor of New York City. He served for two terms, during which time he oversaw the city’s finances during a period of fiscal crisis. He also helped to revitalize Times Square and oversaw the construction of the World Trade Center.
Beame left office in 1977, and he retired from public life. He died in 2001 at the age of 94.
Beame was a successful businessman and politician who helped to revitalize New York City during his tenure as mayor. He was also known for his kind and gentle demeanor, and his love of reading and boxing.
